Welcome to Odysseys: a "game of lively discourse" Henceforth, I will use Odyssey to refer to Odysseys2sense. Like all software, Odyssey has a learning curve. This audio-video presentation will help you move from a newbie to a seasoned user. Open Odysseys-Guide2-Play-1up. Viewing the 1up version allows you to see more detail on the screen shots. Slide 1: Hi. I'm Milo. I am narrating the audio track. I've used Odyssey for two years in the classroom. Odyssey is the best tool I've seen for promoting critical thinking online. Slide 2: The primary goal of Odyssey is to promote civil, productive discourse. I've already spoken of the benefits. Let's talk about power. A player's power is based on three factors: 1. their rating by others of their reviews and responses. 2. The power of the player giving the rating 3. The number of reviews and critiques they submit for others. Slide 3: As before, go to the Odysseys URL, sign in and select your challenge. Recall the structure of the comments. Responses respond to challenges: left-jutified. Reviews review responses: slightly indented. Critiques critique reviews: doubly indented. It is easy to confuse responses and reviews. Note that they are alphabetical. Responses come before reviews. Slide 4: Compare your power (upper right corner) with the median power in this Odyssey. This gives you some idea of how well are doing in comparison with the other players. Slide 5: Become proficient at using the command buttons in the body of the program. There are two command buttons on the left side of the body. The "show reviews" button allows you to see the reviews of a response. The "show critiques" button allows you to see the critiques of a review. Slide 6: There is one command button on the right side of the body. The "See More" button allows you to see the full text of a comment. The "See Less" button allows you to see just a summary of the comment. Now let's shift to the command buttons on the right edge of the screen. Slide 7: Select the "Presentation" button. You can change the ordr in which contributions are displayed. The default is the top option: "Responses with fewest reviews first" The most commonly used option is "My contributions first" Press OK or Cancel to exit. Slide 8: Now consider the option buttons on the lower-right side. There are three sets: one toggle button and two radio buttons. Each button shows the command to be excuted when the button is pushed. Button captions do not show the current status of the system. It may take you some time to get used to this. The primary choice is the toggle button: "Show Mine" versus "Show All" When you press "Show Mine" you can see all the contributions involving you. This option is extremely helpful in maintaining a dialogue. Slide 9: This is the default for the system: Show all, Responses only, Summaries only. It is the most compact: responses only and summaries only. It is the most inclusive: All responses -- not just your responses. Note that the display status is exactly the opposite of what shows on the command buttons. Slide 10: This shows all posts: reviews and critiques -- not just responses. Notice the slight indent for the reviews. Critiques would be indented even more. Note the buttons on the far left: Review and Critique. These do not identify the status of anything. These are command buttons. Slide 11: Pressing the "Responses only" button and the "Full Texts button on the bottom right gives this display. Slide 12: Pressing the All Posts and Full texts buttons in the lower right gives this view. Slides 13-16: The next four slides give the same combinations as the last four -- with one difference. Instead of showing all contributions, the screen only shows those contributions related to you. When the "Show Mine" button is pressed, all the contributions include the phrase "you have posted here" or "Your response". Slide 13: Press "Show Mine", "responses only" and "Summaries Only." Slide 14: Press "All posts" to obtain this view. Slide 15: Press "Responses Only" and "full texts". Slide 16: Press "All Posts" and "Full texts" for this view. Slide 17: Here are three common actions that use this option buttons. First, to see everything involving you, select "Show-Mine", "All-Posts" and "Summaries only". Do this often to how others are rating your responses, reviews and critiques. Second, to review responses you haven't yet reviewed, From the command buttons in the lower-right, select "Show All", "Responses only" and "Summaries only." From the Presentation window, select "My contributions first". Skip over those to find responses you have not reviewed. Third, to review those responses that have the fewest reviews. From the option buttons, select Show-all, Responses-only and Summaries only. From the presentation window, select "Responses with the fewest reviews first." Slide 18: Now you know a lot more about this system. Here are four recommendations: First, be accurate in your grading. My motto is "Judge and be preared to be judged." Don't grant the unearned; don't withhold what has been earned. Second, be helpful in your reasons. Identify opportunities for improvement. Third, do more than the minium required. Giving constructive feedback is a skill. Odyssey can help you develop that skill. Fourth. Critique the reviews you recieve. Acknowledge those you find helpful; question those you don't understand. Now it is up to you to work on your thinking and communication skills. These are critical skills for life. Best wishes.
